ABOUT ME

About me - a life steeped in tea

From the moment I could walk, I walked among tea gardens. My name Lahiru means “the rising sun in the morning”, and nothing pairs better with the sunrise than a cup of tea to refresh one's soul. This is the story of how tea became my destiny and still flavours me to this day.

At just 5 to 7 years old, while most of my friends were still playing around, I was already learning to read the land — guided by my father, G. L. Thilakarathna, a visionary who pioneered organic tea and revolutionised instant tea vending globally. My earliest memories are rooted in the misty hills of Needwood Estate, Haputale (the world’s first internationally certified organic tea factory), where I trailed behind him through the emerald waves of tea gardens — breathing in the earthy scent of young leaves and the wisdom of generations.

I listened intently as he spoke to farmers, experimented with sustainable methods, and slowly, leaf by leaf, transformed a conventional tea factory into a fully organic haven — long before "organic" was a global trend. He wasn’t just making tea. He was reshaping the future of Sri Lankan agriculture, and I was there, absorbing it all.

As I grew, so did my role.

By 16 — sometimes even earlier — I stood beside him at global exhibitions like World Expo, Gulf Food, DTTC Global Tea Forums, FoodEx Japan and many Sri Lankan exhibitions, pitching the story of Ceylon Tea

After graduating in law from University of London and taking oaths as an Attorney-at-Law, I returned to tea — not to simply follow in his footsteps, but to walk alongside them and pave new roads. I lead to integrate advanced global technologies into our vending machines, bringing the warmth of a fresh brew to the press of a button. For this innovation — blending leaf-to-cup excellence with automation — I and my team were honoured with a National Innovation Award 2022.

I experimented with bold new flavours, crafted unique instant tea and premix formulations, and trained under masters in tea tasting, blending, and the sacred rituals of tea production. My journey took me deep into the world of instant tea manufacturing, tea grading, premix development, and everything in between.

But my learning didn’t stop at flavour. I became trained in GMP and HACCP systems, ensuring that every cup we produced carried not just aroma and taste — but trust. With my legal training, I worked to safeguard our intellectual property, defend our brands, logos, and GI (Geographical Indications), and protect the soul of our tea from imitation across continents.

Alongside this, I took on the challenge of brand protection, regulatory compliance, and international trade law — drafting contracts, setting standards, and supporting our global expansion. I became a quiet custodian of our identity in a global market.

Then came my own vision - tea and diplomacy

A concept where a cup of Ceylon tea could become more than a beverage — it could be a tool of cultural dialogue, friendship, and soft power. Though I later paused this initiative to pursue a second Master’s in Development Economics(after completing my first in International Law), the spirit of Tea and Diplomacy never left me.

Eventually, I joined the FAO Headquarters in Rome, where I served in global development. And even in the heart of international agricultural policy making, I carry with me not just the aroma of Ceylon tea, but the legacy of my people, the strength of our soil, and the dreams brewed under Sri Lanka’s morning sun. Wherever I go, tea follows — in every conversation, every project, and every opportunity to share our island’s proud story with the world.

Guided the SL Embassy to organize the Sri Lankan stall at FAO of the United Nations for International Tea Day 2024, on behalf of Ceylon Tea. It was a great pleasure to present it to the Director General of FAO with the acting ambassador of Sri Lanka.

This is not just my story. It is the story of people of tea, told one sip at a time.
